Independent creative practice notes
A focused cycle of creative practice.
Choose a piece, write a small brief, make one visible variation, and review what the difference teaches you.
01
Write the brief
Name the effect you want to examine and the part of the work that carries it. Keep the question small enough to test in one session.
Describe the material you can change and one constraint that will remain stable. Avoid turning the brief into a list of unrelated improvements.
02
Save a baseline
Make or select a first version and preserve it before revising. Add a short note about what it currently does.
The baseline does not need to be polished. It needs to be clear enough that the next version can be compared with it.
03
Make the variation
Change the relationship named in the brief. Keep a record of the actual decision so the effect does not become detached from its cause.
Compare the versions beside one another. Describe what becomes stronger, quieter, clearer, or more uncertain before choosing a preference.
04
Use a focused response
Ask another reader a question about the work or conduct a deliberate review yourself. Record an observation separately from a suggested solution.
Choose the next experiment around the useful observation. Preserve the reason for the revision along with the new version.
